Xiao Sweetie, our cute community girl is injured

Xiao sweetie (one of the three silbing cats at the provision shop) has a bad wound near her hind leg 3 weeks ago. At first, the wound looked ok. On monday when i saw her, i am shocked to see that her wound had turned very wet and red. Sister and I were deciding what to do... Then we decided to ask blood to bring a carrier down... we may send her to the vet or treat her ourselves with antibodies powder. Xiao sweetie screamed all the way back to our home.


Xiao sweetie had not poo poo since Monday. She refused to drink any water but she had pee twice. Bit of worried that she did not poo. Mum told me to take her downstair to poo but i am afraid that she will run away and hide. We did not usually get to see xiao sweetie every day unlike mimi and pi pa.We had decided to treat her ourselves.

The wound seem better, not wet at least. I had poured anti bodies power on her twice per day. Sister had also get a infection powder from pet clinic on tuesday but i am using the antibodies power more than the infection powder. I had locked xiao sweetie inside the storeroom as she wants to cry when she see us. When xiao sweetie cried, xia mi (eye infection cat from ECP that has been staying with us since 3 weeks ago) will sing in response.

Luckily xiao sweetie is an extremely tame cat. She will purr whenever i let her out of her carrier. I do not know why she refused to drink any water. She did not want to eat inside her carrier so i had put her out to eat. But when i put her water outside her carrier, she refused to lick at her water.

Refused water and do not want to poo poo, i wonder if i should let her downstairs...but the rain seem neverending.The wound might turn worse with water. Hmm... will decide tml..maybe will let her run for a while downstair before i take her home again....

Blood had fly off to Germany

Yesterday at 9 plus, mum, sister, blood and I took a cab to Changi airport. Blood will be going to Germany on a student exchange program for 6 months. I had set another clock on my blog to see blood's time there in Germany.



While waiting for checkin, sister chatted with this cute spanish guy sitting next to her. Sister had asked blood to 'network' with that cute guy so that if blood ever need help, he can ask that guy for help.The guy had 'warned' blood that German girls are very open and love to party everyday. I wonder how true is that.... Blood was rather reluctant but in the end, blood managed to get the email from that guy.

I realised that i had choosen a non-related picture for blood trip to germany. But i guess blood now got a bit more burdens like the cat with many mices -

Now blood need to:=
1) find a place to stay(he will only get his hostel at april, it is rather irresponsible of that U not to arrange a room once blood arrive in Germany and inform ppl in the last minute that they will have no hostel now). Blood had managed to book a room when he arrived in Germany today.
2) cook his own meal
3) figure out how to have fun there (not partying every day)
4) how to speak german so that he can have decent talk with 'hot' german girls
5) find out how to reduce expenses
6) How to 'survive' in the winter
7) How to MSN with sister and me - we are now in a differenet time zone - germany is behind us by 7 hours.

Anyway, 6 months will passes every fast... Not before long, we will be in airport again waiting for blood's flight to arrive... hee.......when sister went to HK, it also passed very fast. Maybe i will be posting more of sweetie and her silbings here so blood will know what are they doing meanwhile in Singapore. DD may be spending more time in blood's room...... - sleeping on his bed...

Third day @ Cheng Huang Miao - Ge Zai Xi

Today, i went with mum to cheng huang miao to watch opera again.

The storyline today is very good.

Storyline:

The emperor's sister met a demon when she was outside in the wild. She screamed for help. Just then, the dragon palace 3rd daughter(not sure of her name, so i will called her 'zhen') appeared with her maid. But Zhen was not match for the demon. Both the princess, zhen and her maid were captured.

In another scene, a guy named 'Huang Ying' was in the forest with his cousin. Huang ying met 'da peh gong' whom gave ying two magical weapons - a axe that can cut anything and a magical rope that can be shorten or lengthen to save anyone.

On his way home, Huang ying heard a sound for help. Huang saved a man whom was almost drowned. The man was called 'liow feiying'. Liow thanked huang for saving his life. Both then decided to become godbrothers and went back to Huang's village.

News that the princess was kidnapped by the demon travelled to huang's village. Huang was determined to save the princess. Using the magical rope, huang and liow found the cave that the demon was hiding. Liow asked huang to go down the dark cave while he will put a rope around Huang to guide him back to the exit. In the dark cave, Huang saved the princess and Liow pulled the princess out of the cave.

When the princess was out in the open, Liow purposely let go of the rope of huang and throw a rock down the cave while pushing a rock over the entrance of the cave. When the princess regained conscious , Liow lied that he was 'huang ying'. In the cave earlier, Huang ying had told the princess his name.

Huang was very upset over his new godbrother's action. He wandered around the cave and heard Zhen's cry for help. Huang saved Zhen from her imprisonment. Zhen then took huang out of the cave and told huang her real idenity. Zhen invited huang to her home underwater.

Meanwhile the emperor promised to allow liow to take the princess as his wife after 3 years. Huang was in the water palace for 3 days. 1 day in the water palace equalled to 3 years in earth. Huang was shocked when zhen told him that. He wished to see his mother so zhen used her cystal ball to view the earth. Huang's mum was blind after 3 years. Zhen gave huang a powder that can heal huang's mum eyes. Huang went back to find his mum and healed her eyes.

Huang, his mum and his cousin wanted to sue liow. So they went to find a officer. The officer was in fact Liow. When he saw that Huang was still alive, he was angry and determined to murder huang. So Liow lied that he was trying to find him all these years. Liow invited huang for a drink. After making huang drunk, Liow killed Huang.

Liow then tried to kill huang's mum and his cousin. Luckily Zhen appeared and saved them. Zhen asked huang's mum to report this case to justice bao and she will go to hell to save huang. In hell, zhen met 'Guanyin'. The godness of mercy promised to save huang if zhen can stay by her side.

The emperor learnt of Liow's real identify after justice bao reported the case to him. Liow was finally killed and huang came back to life.

My Furry Sleeping Basket

This is the basket that i bought for du and KK on CNY eve. A normal fruit basket that cost only $0.90 from Sheng Siong. I am unable to get a picture of them sleeping inside. They got real excited when they saw me with a camera. I will try to capture their sleeping posture one day. They looked real cute when they sleep inside, they looked like a hen hatching eggs. The red bear belong to Du, KK had another brown bear. KK even used the bear as his pillow while sleeping inside his basket.

Day out @ CNY

At last, i am finally free to start blogging about my whereabouts @ CNY.

Day 1:

I managed to avoid meat for half a day till 12 noon where i ate bak kwa. We needed to go out to feed dad's workplace cats. We went out at 12 plus. There are now 5 cats at dad's place - 2 siblings cats, 1 mother cat & her little kitten ( 1 brother cat and mummy are sterilized) and one blackie male.

After feeding them, dad took us to 'Tian Fu Gong' (Thian Hock Keng Temple) where we prayed to 'ma zhu'. Dad's work involved working at the sea so he need to pray to 'ma zhu' every year. Next, we went to the 'wang hai da bei gong' temple (Yueh Hai Ching Temple) near shenton way. It is actually a small temple near the sea. Nowaday, we can no longer see the sea from the temple. We then went to "River Hongbao" that is nearby. Afternoon view is so different from night so the crowds is not so big at that time. We ended our afternoon outing with a late lunch at Mac.

At night, dad, mum and I went to 'Cheng Huang Miao' to watch the taiwanese opera. This year performance is by a Taiwan, Tainan troope "Wei Shan Gei Zai Zi". The name of day 1 performance was called " Jin Yu Man tang" - a simple plot where a person whom was framed for murder finally had justice done when he met the emperor and saved him.

Taiwan opera is quite nice if u appreciate chinese culture. U do not really need to understand the singing like me..i only half understand what are they singing about but i understand what they are talking. The customs are nice, the singing fantastic, the performers excellent - i give every taiwanese opera a full 5*****.

Day2:
Today, we went out at around 12 plus after eating our 'ban nian' lunch where we had to eat the 'bai tu yu'. I am not sure what is the real name of this breed of fish called but this fish only do not taste fishy during the jan-feb session. We went to dad's place for cat feeding again. Next, we went to East Coast Park. Sister took me to see the cats. There was a group of 10 cats that are extremely tame. I loved one baby cat that is around 2 months old. I think i am crazy when i took most of the 10 cats to pray to the 'da bei gong' altar that someone set near their fishing area. I prayed for the safety of those cute cats.

At night, we went to watch opera again. The crowds came out in full force to watch the opera. Today performance is "The fight between chow gong and the peach girl". There is a small part of unrelated performance where the actors were hung at wires and fly around the stage. The performance was just as great as yesterday.

The story line was:
A mother went to a temple to pray for his son. The fortune teller(Chow) reowned for his accurate predication of one's death predicted that the woman's son will die within 3 days. The poor mother was very upset with this. It so happened that the woman's neighbour had a daughter. This daughter was called "Lin tao hua" (peach). She was raised by a high master that taught her magical skills. She begged her master to allow her to return home so lin went home.

Lin get to know about the woman's woe and taugh her to pray for his son where the woman needed to knee down holding an incense once she walked 3 steps. The woman managed to save her son's life. Chow was very unhappy that someone managed to broke his predication of death. Chow's little priest was prediceted to die by his master, chow. Lin taught that little priest to avoid death by visiting the 8 immorals whom extended his life to 800 years.

Chow got to know about Lin's presence after tricking his disciple to reveal how he get to avoid death. Chow forced his younger sister to disguise as a man to marry Lin. On the day of marriage, Chow tried every time to murder Lin but failed. Finally, Lin died when Chow's little priest accidentally let his master to carry the peach's leaves that is said to be the 'heart and spirit' of Lin.

It is a sad story. Mum was asking me why the good must die. I guess it happened every time, not all performance had happy ending. I loved the special effect of day 2 performance - the smoke, the flying, the fire and the beauitiful scene. The materials of the stage are made luminous material so everything give a beautiful glow when the light is switched off.

Day 3:
We went out at usual time. Mum needed to take blood to pray as blood will be going to Germany for 6 months. We went to Cheng haung temple and Guanying miao @ bugis. Guanying miao was full of people. No opera for today but mum and i planned to go on sat.

Madness at Sheng Siong Supermkt

Every year (3 years) without fail, there will be one or two lines of cars on both sides of the road. Today, SS will be operating 24 h, there are like 50 over cars now. I just watched how two buses tried to pass through the lines of cars from opposite direction.

Traffic police had come and go. Police car had come and go. Cars disappeared within 10 mins and new cars reappeared within 10 min. I think this as a "Mouse and Tiger" game.

From my window, i can always seen those ppl rushing to their cars when the white tigers came. SS's staff is quite good, they always announced of the 'attack of the white tigers' whenever they come so those little mice can rushed to their cars immediately. Of course one odd mouse is never so lucky to escape from the clutches of the tiger. As the chinese saying say " Kill one to warn others" ( i am unable to type chinese words using this template).

I had braved the crowd today. I bought a basket for dudu to sleep in. Yesterday, i bought one for KK. Because i am not sure if they are willing to sleep inside them, i did not buy two at one go. But since SS is only opposite my block, i thought it is easy to get what i want just like normal days. BUT not today. There are like 5 to 6 ppl in the line.I find it funny that i am waiting in the line paying for a mere $0.90 basket. I only went to the second storey that selling all sorts of non-eatable stuff. You name it, it can mostly be found. The first floor that is where the maddness of the crowd began. KK and Dudu do love the new baskets i bought for them. They sleep inside like a hen warming up her eggs.

I was telling mum that maybe we can go to SS at 3 am in the morning. This is just a joke actually. I had completed all my tasks more or less. I am quite satisfied of it in fact.

Mum said that she still need me to help her with some tasks of hers..... tml will be a busy day....Just as mum said, CNY is the only time where ppl bothered to clean up their whole house.

Ah..why am i forced to use google to log in?

I wonder why i am forced to sign up the google account..

CNY is coming soon on sun. I still got plenty of work that i need to do before CNY. Mum had always tell me not to delay anything till CNY or else for the new year, u will still find lot of unfinished tasks.

Let me list my tasks that i needed to complete by sat:

1) Bath DD tml ( i had just bathed sweetie this morning and KK and du last week)
2) spray frontline for all my cats. I had to bath them early this year so that i can use the frontline on them.
3) repay sister $$$. This is impt... mum said if u owe ppl $ and u did not repay them before CNY, u will always owe ppl something forever. I owed sister $$ that i keep forgetting to repay becuase of the sudden blot of amnesia that i suffered when i forgot my pin for my ATM last time when i bought my MP3 player last year.
4) clean my terrapin's houses.
5) top up my cats' dry food. i had asked dad to help me buy a big pack of dry food tml.
6) Buy some wet-canned food for mimi. I may be out till late on CNY so i planned to store my dry food in my letterbox before i went out, once i am back, i will be able to feed mimi and friends much quicker. Mum and i are excited about the coming Taiwaness Ge Zai Xi at Cheng Huang Miao this year. Maybe we will be going to watch the opera on Day 1 of CNY like last year.
7) Cut some fish red packet to hang in the new 'Four Season Lime' that dad bought from the plant nursery at Seletar Farmway. We also bought Pussy Willow from the market in Kovan. I had already do an makeover for it.

I had written all my tasks down in case i had forgotten to do them.

Spring cleaning is almost completed.

Yesterday, mum and I were at Si Ma Lu to buy some NY goodies. We had prayed at the famouse guanyin temple. We bought some tops at baleno. So far, sister had no new clothes on NY while i had only a red top. I had bought two more tops to my collection while mum bought sister a new shirt. But i had bought myself three pairs of new shoes...

We headed to the stalls above the mkt. Mum spotted a kitty cat at one stall. The auntie there told us that malays love buying that bag. She then told us that her neighbour had 52 of their cats taken away as a result of complaint. This is sad but when u did not sterlize ur cats, 2 cats will become 100 cats within a year.

Ok..bad news aside... Happy new year everyone....

Hi folks, I am coco, the cat NOT Coco li wen the singer...ha.... I am now staying at Vincent's house. One of my human friend(KL) took me to this big house with lot of other cats and dogs on Sunday. I felt lucky that i may be about to have a home. Let me sell myself before i introduced my other pals to u.We are all former cats of ECP but some nice people offer to keep us for adoption. Please take note that KL and her folks had spent 2 weeks with me as compared to my other friends so i will have more things to boost how smart i am... hee hee...

But clever me came to find KL and spotted me with flu a second time. I guess i am not fully recovered the last time. Ok, now is the time for me to promote myself.

6) I am a chatty guy... (only when i am eating). i think i am scared that other cats will snatch my food so i chat while i am eating to ask them not to come near me. If some nice ppl adopt me, i will purr everytime i eat instead of trying to meow...

Trapped high up the tree

Yesterday, We were out feeding pi pa and mimi. We cannot find mimi but we could heard him crying to us for help. Sister then spotted mimi high up above the tree.

We called mimi to come down but he refused to move.

We tempted him with food but he refused to move.

We moved away from him hoping to find ginger but he refused to move.

Mimi just refused to move down. And we did not find ginger.

I am a bit worried about mimi but i am hoping that he would come down to find auntie L at 11 plus.

Sister then called Auntie L about mimi. Auntie L said that mimi will come down himself. At 11.45 pm, Auntie L then called Sister whom was in LaLa land with the cats. Sister pushed the phone to me... Auntie L told me to get a bamboo holder. (not sure what the proper name, but it is the pole u used to push up ur clothes to dry)

I am not sure if there was a communication breakdown between the two of us but from what i heard, Auntie L certainly mentioned about bringing down a bamboo holder. I remembered myself telling Auntie L that the pole may be too short but L said never mind, just use to pop pop mimi down. I am not very keen actually to come down with the bamboo as it was quite late. Then Auntie L started to say if i do not come down, mimi will be stranded in the tree till tml. I disliked the way auntie L speak to me... it's like leaving me with no choice... either u come or the cat will be up the tree. I then replied 'OK lor' half-heartedly.

Sister was too busy chasing cats @ ECP in Lalaland. She refused to move from the bed. So mum asked blood to go down with me as it is quite late. Mum found me a extendable clothes pole to pop pop mimi. Blood and I then meet Auntie L at the bottom of Mimi's tree. Auntie L gave me a 'not happy' look when she saw me holding a short pole and she started to nag about wanting a long long pole when i shouted her up that this is an extendable pole. I am equally unhappy seeing her face...

Mimi was high up at around 2m from the ground. Auntie L took 4 chairs from the nearby coffeeshop and poor blood as expected had to stand up the chair trying to pop mimi that refused to move an inch. Crazy auntie L then suggested blood to climb the tree. I had forgot to mention that the tree had thin branches and was extremely dangerous for any one attemping to be monkey. Moreover, blood had never climb a single tree in his whole life... Crazy auntie L then tried to ask a male passer by to attemp to be monkey but of course anyone with normal IQ will refused to perform such a dangerous act.

After 15 min at 12 midnight, Auntie L then said she needed to go and feed the other cats.. She said she will called SPCA to rescue mimi but she said she do not know if SPCA will just take mimi away. Auntie L then left blood and me staring at mimi up the tree.

Blood then used my house key to wave to mimi. He also used a long oil palm leaf and wave at mimi. Instead mimi shifted further UP. At 12.30 am, both blood and me got stiff neck staring up at mimi. I told blood that we should gave up now. Just then, i saw ginger got bullied by a big dark grey tabby. Ginger also ran up the same tree as mimi but at a lower height.

Poor ginger..i chased the never seen before tabby male away and left.

When i woke up in the morning, sister went to find mimi and come back with good news. Mimi had come down from the tree himself. Thanks god.... i packed some rice for mimi to eat. I did not sleep well yesterday, tossing in my bed thinking of poor mimi. I even prayed for mimi to come down himself by chanting 'guanyin pusa' name in my mind many times, asking for goddness of mercy to take care of mimi.

When i looked at my cats at home, i am thinking how lucky all 4 of them are....no need to got chased by other cats, no need to find food, got shelter, got 5 ppl to sayang them, no evil ppl making complaints and no risk of being put to sleep...

Life between a home cat and community cats had such a great difference.

How do i feed a scared cat & a big bully cat?

Sunday, mum told me that there was another abandoned kitten at exactly the same spot where KK and dudu were abandoned in may last year. The new kitten looked around 3 months old - sadly another case of abandoned pet from irresponsbile cat owner.

Sister and I went to feed it wet canned food. We decided to relocate the new cat that we named' mui mui' to an less-obvious place where there are less ppl walking.

We shifted it to our block. Then pi pa came to find us. Initally, the new kitten is friendly toward pi pa and both of them even rubbed nose. So after we had fed mui mui, we decided to leave the two of them together. We thought that the new kitten may be 'adopted' by pi pa as his foster daughter... just like xiao bai and baby, ginger and mimi....

How very wrong we were!!!!Then all of the sudden, we heard a loud scream from mui mui... pi pa had decided to bully the new kitten instead of caring for her. We had no choice but to move mui mui to the old nana's area and left her there.

At sun night, we saw mui mui hiding under the drain..not wanting to come out for food.

Mon morning, I cannot located mui mui at her hideout. At night, sister called to say that mui mui was up in the tree, unable to come down. There was someone helping mui mui to come down. But at last, mui mui dropped to the ground, unharmed.

Sister then carried mui mui to another hideout.... somewhere near the back of our block.... At night, we decided to carry her into a thicker bushes area where she is still hiding today...

Now, the problem is it is extremely difficult to feed pi pa and mui mui. We tried to feed mui mui first but somehow, pi pa heard us and came to kapoh. Then mui mui started to scream at pi pa. Yesterday, silly mui mui went to find a man whom was drinking beer at the void deck. Luckily the man loved cat. He told us that he had chased pi pa away when pi pa tried to bully mui mui.So sister take care of mui mui while i went to find mimi. But what if the man do not like cats?......and mui mui kept rubbing his legs.....

Yesterday, i heard a poor pitiful meow coming from afar. I waved to sister to come. We then decided the meow came from the multi-storey carpark. We decided to go up the carpark to see whom was crying. We walked up and open the door. Poor ginger was trapped inside the car park unable to come out. The carpark door is closed so poor ginger cried for help. I carried ginger down the carpark and back to his usual place. Luckily i happened to hear ginger's cries.... mum said that maybe someone played a prank on ginger and put him there... but i thought maybe ginger followed someone to the carpark and was trapped when the person drove off his car.

It is becoming bit of a headache trying to stop two cats from screaming at the middle of the night. I do wanted to feed pi pa but i 'hated' him to bully mui mui. Maybe i will 'crept' to bring mui mui to another place first.. then bring her back to her hideout again so that pi pa will not 'discovered' me.... hmm....

Sister trid to bring mui mui home today when it rain ..but mui mui cried so sister put her back downstairs... And mui mui also screamed at sweetie and DD whom do not make any noises while mui mui screamed... good girls, sweetie & DD.

Dad's workplace cats

These three cats are from dad's workplace that is a warehouse. The two older brother cats are due for sterilization next week and in feb. There used to be five siblings cats around but two died of poison and the third died of a fatal accident. Now, there are only these two brothers. The little black cat joined the two brothers suddenly one day.

From the picture, u will noted that the area is quite dirty... in fact, everything there are dull and black. It is really a bad condition to live in for cats... so far, mummy cat & big ah Ou had gone M.I.A after we had sterilized them.... 

Coco @ ECP - the correct female ginger

sister told me that i got Coco picture wrong in my earlier post so i had deleted the earlier post and posted the right picture.

Sister bought back this female ginger from ECP on Tuesday. One of her feeder had named her "Mary"...but we had decided to rename her. Mum though of naming her "Ling Ling" as we already had "Shu Shu" and "Lei Lei" from Marine Parade (Ma Lin Ma Lei).....

Then mum suggested "Ke Ke" so we decided to translate to English name, CoCo. She's quite a purring pussy cat. Whenever we let her out, she will purr real loud. Sister had given her a bath this morning when she poo in her carrier.

Coco has a strange big "7" tail - a tail that curled into the number seven. Oh, forgot to mention. Sister got her home because she had a flu. Of course, mum scolded sister again.... Coco is still sneezing today, we are not sure when she will recover. 

Sweetie 2nd year in our house

While feeding mimi and friends today, sister asked me if i know today is Sweetie's 'birthday'. Today is in fact Sweetie 2nd year in our house.

Sweetie first come to our house at 17 Jan 2005 as our offical home cat.

This is the first time:
1) i had some furry cat in my room
2) I wake up to find a cat beside me
3) I find sweetie living in a proper house with me, not in the street
4) I get to know sweetie's personality better ( what she hate - me to touch her bob-tail)
5) I know how to take care of a cat
6) be in charge of sweetie's small big business

Overall, sweetie is our first cat giving me my first experience as a cat owner. She remain as No 1. till No2. DD arrived in our household in Sept 2005 and No 3 and 4, KK and dudu arrived at 4 May 2006.

Happy 2nd year, sweetie.....

Will this ever happen in Singapore? Cats in HDB....

I loved what this lady had written to the ST forum regarding the ban on cats in HDB flats. Sister had written to one MP whom forward her letter to HDB... and the usual response is a template reply as always... HDB must have countless letters from cat lovers asking them to lift the ban of cats in HDB flats so they come prepare with a template reply that do not require much work to read details.

Will Singapore ever make cats legal in HDB flats one wonderful day? I had begin to doubt so... Aah... sister had asked me to give medicine to Coco (ECP cats), will post about her later...

MY FRIEND who lives in a terrace house has just adopted a cat. It makes me envy him that his cat is 'legal' while my poor cat is an 'illegal occupant' as I live in an HDB flat.
My cat has been with me for years, and has yet to cause any nuisance that is enough to drive any neighbours to pound on our doors. I did an online search and to my surprise found these two statuary boards' stand on cats as pets.

A brochure from Agri-food & Veterinary Authority states that 'Cats make good indoor pets' (April 2001).

However, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) states: 'Cats are not allowed to be kept in HDB flats as they are nomadic in nature and are difficult to be confined within the flats. Due to the nomadic nature of cats, the nuisances caused by cats such as shedding of fur, defecating/urinating in public areas, noise disturbance etc would affect the environment and neighbourliness in our housing estates. In view of this, HDB has the policy of not allowing cats to be kept in HDB flats.' (Aug 24, 2006)

My cat has no problem in living in my HDB flat for all these years and has never made attempts to run away from home. Thus, I do not understand how 'cats are nomadic in nature and difficult to be confined within the flats'.

I also do wonder, does a cat shed less fur when on a landed property than when it is within an HDB flat?

If not, then why is this raised as a justification for banning cats in HDB flats?
Since there is no difference in the amount of fur shed, and responsible owners do take time to brush cats as much as they do for dogs to remove loose fur, this should be a non-issue.
In any case, the shedding of fur is within the owners' flat anyway.

The frequent barking of dogs is also definitely louder than any meowing of sterilised cats, so why are cats banned and dogs allowed?

As for cats urinating in public areas, I think dogs of irresponsible owners will defecate just as much in public too.

I feel that the HDB's banning of cats is too harsh on responsible cat owners like myself.

my red-ear sliders

Today, i was reading calsifer's blog regarding saving the lifes of red terrrapins. I realised that i seldom blog about my own pair of red eared sliders.

I had mine for over ten years. Both are females, that i named Ah-bob and lizzie. I used to have a third one but he died 3 years ago, his name was xiao fei. Xiao fei was our favourite terrapin, fat and round and very tame. Unfortunately, he grew a tumour that we can never removed. We spent $200 vet treatment but xiao fei never recovered.

Back to Ah bob and lizzie, i had ah bob given to me by my third uncle from my mum's side. Here is how ah-bob entered our life:

One fine day, we went to third uncle's house and seeing his terrapins that we find(we were only primary school at that time) very cute, mum asked if we could bring his terrapins to play before returning the pair to uncle. So we brought that pair home. Then dad stiked 4-D and suddenly third uncle called to say his daughter wanted her terrapins back. When third uncle was at our home to bring home his own pair, he also brought a third terrapin to give it to us. This is Ah-bob.

Lizzie was bought from at B453 AMK market. Xiaofei was bought from another AMK (B339) market.

This is how we had three terrapins. Xiaofei stayed with us for 6 to 7 years.

Most people buy baby terrapins because they are cute but most do not keep their terrapins when it become bigger. In fact, the bigger they are, they also become more smelty and dirtier. I never thought of dumping them into the reservoirs. In calsifer's blog, that person appealing for help was asking this qn:

Do U have relevant informations on how to release them safely back into the sea or reservoirs as they are not the local species here…. ? or

It is totally impossible to send home bred terrapins back into the wild. They can hardly survive in the water as a matter of fact. Most can actually drowned if they cannot find any rock to rest. And there is also the problem of finding food. It is logical to think this way - at home, they never need to hunt for food, in the wild, do u think they can learn to hunt. Maybe yes..maybe no. Yes is the terrapins are big enough. No is where too many terrapins are abandoned at the place. And certainly no terrapins can survive in the sea esp when the water is salted.

i do not know if my own pairs are luckier than those other 'brothers' as i had keep them in baby bathtub - ah bob in baby tub while lizzie in a red round container. That is the best i can do to keep them in our home. I think ah-bob is 12 years or more.... i had forgotten their real ages as times passes.

So far, none of my cats evern disturb my terrapins. The cats will stare at them but never put their claws at them. I always tell my cats that ah bob and lizzie are their elder 'jie jie' although they are of different species. I tried moving ah-bob close to DD once and DD ran away. Hmm..i do not think DD is afraid of bob. DD is never afraid of strange 'UFOs' in our house. That fearless cat is only scared of door bell and strangers.

We need a Collective Community to Curb Animal Abuse

I refer to the article 'Cat strangled with nylon string' (ST, 8 Jan 06) and cannot help feeling sickened at how animal abuse has happened yet again. To prevent such cases from happening, I wish to propose that we promote a 'collective community' towards helping the animals in our midst.
It is crucial to find the culprit responsible for the abuse so that future acts will not be repeated. We only attempt to find the culprit after such issues happen, but how much have we done to prevent animal abuse?
For too long, cats on the streets have been assumed to be the under the care of NGOs like the SPCA and Cat Welfare Society. The government assumes a passive role in animal issues, and only steps in to cull cats (this is not animal welfare) or investigate cases of animal abuse. So much more can be done by the government; such as giving resources towards sterilization efforts, so that the number of cats can be reduced in the long term, that translating into fewer cats vulnerable to abuse.
Besides that, cats should also be part of the collective community and responsibility of ordinary citizens like you and me. This means first, we do not complain about them to the Town Council that leads to the cats being culled. Second, we should not abuse cats even if we do not like them. It always pains me to see children throwing things or shouting at cats to scare them off. Third, we should encourage the formation of networks of resident volunteers to help look after the welfare of cats - sterilizing them and feeding responsibly. Having networks of resident volunteers also help build community ties across race, religion and gender - neighbourliness that is lamented to be missing as seen in the report 'Community ties: It's the basics that count' (ST, 8 Jan 06).
For too long, some have assumed that 'stray' cats should be under the care of those who 'like them' and should 'bring them home', without due consideration of the feasibility of doing so. This mentality should change as our society matures.
As a youth, I hope to see more kind acts towards animals manifested in everyday spaces and a collective responsibility towards helping animals in our midst. This will curb animal abuse in the long term.

I WAS aghast when I read the article, 'Cat strangled with nylon string' (ST, Jan 8). When will such abuse stop? Or have we become apathetic to such cruel acts?
A gracious society is not made up of just educated citizens, green trees, beautiful parks and the latest infrastructure. There is also humanity, kindness and empathy towards our fellow human beings and other occupants of this earth. Or have we forgotten this?

Killing for the sake of killing or for pleasure is plain wrong and deserves the strongest punishment. While justice is meted out to humans, our animal friends seem to deserve less of this justice. The maximum penalty for animal cruelty is a $10,000 fine and up to 12 months' jail. I can recall only one instance where an abuser was sentenced to a year in jail.
I believe this problem can be tackled at two levels.

The government authorities can teach kindness and empathy through campaigns and education. Set an example against killing; instead of culling strays, why not consider a humane method to control the stray population? Or start a kindness movement in school that encourages children to interact, play with and care for small animals.
As parents, siblings and friends, we can educate and impress on others the importance of humanity, kindness and respect for life - both human and animal.
Until we achieve this, we cannot call ourselves a gracious society.

I refer to the report Jan 8, 2007 "Cat strangled with nylon string".
A few days ago, I was walking behind a little girl, aged about seven year-old, accompanied by an elderly lady in her 70's, presumably her grandmother.

They passed by a sterilized tipped ear community cat.
The little girl screamed and made threatening gestures at the cat who ran to hide amongst the bicycles parked in the void deck of a block of HDB flats. The grandmother stood nearby and awaited, apathetically.

The following day, I passed by an elderly Peranakan lady, also in her 70's, who was feeding another sterilized tipped ear community cat at the same void deck, responsibly with shredded fish placed on a piece of paper. She said she "sayang" ("love") the community cats who gave her much joy in her old age. She said that sometimes she has to "marah" ("scold") the children from the nearby primary school, for hurting the cats.

I think we can longer ignore the symptom of animal abuse such as what had happened to this cat at Simei - strangled with nylon string. How can we hypocritically claim to be a civilized society when such symptom of barbarism is occuring so often?
How can we inculcate kindness in our children when on a national level we are killing 13,000 cats every year, assisted with free loan of cat traps from the AVA and some Town Council officers freely engaging pest control firms to trap cats to be killed in respond to feeback from residents about cats?

Let's start a pro-active Kindness Movement by involving grass-root resources such as the schools, the RC's and Community Clubs to impart EMPATHY in our children as well as their adult guardians with project that involves the care of the community cats. Such program is a good antidote to the current perception that the young people nowadays are too engrossed with their self-satiation. Learning to be kind in children will also teach them to the kind to the increasing number of Singaporeans who are greying and perceived by some youngters to be "old, frail and useless". Perhaps this is how some people view the stray cats as well.

Diamond are forever

Sister bought diamond home yesterday or today at midnight. We placed her in the storeroom. Today morning, when i took a look at her, i am surprised Diamond is so very tame. She keep rubbing against the cage and my finger. I told sister that Diamond is tame. So sister took her out and sayang her. I also carried her in my hand before her big day today. She is scheduled for sterilization today and then she will be released to ECP two or three days later by V. Diamond actually purr loudly when i carried her. She is so cute, it is a pity that she will be returned to the harsh life at ECP later. This is also the last time i will be getting to see Diamond again. Farewall Diamond.....

The story of the search for Billie

Anyway, lastThurs, sister and I went feeding mimi and playing with ginger and little sweetie when a man came forward to ask us if we had seen a black cat with white socks and blue collar. We replied "No". and the man asked us to keep a lookout for his missing cat that had been gone for 2 days.

Sister then asked if the man said the cat is what colour. We saw the man again so sister approached the man to ask more clearly why was his cat missing. Apparently, the cat escaped from his sister's flat from a gap in the door mesh. The cat is only staying in the flat for two week while the man and his wife went for a holiday. The poor cat was scared of the residential three other cats that bully him.

I then also went to find siter. The man's wife came and the 4 of us chatted about billie, the missing cat.I asked the wife if she had called the authority. The man then asked us if the chance of cats being rounded up was high in our area. I told him that there used to have cats that were being caught by pest control but since Auntie L had contact with TC people, so far, no cats are being caught. I told him that in Tampines, the situation is more serious. The man that said that maybe he should be happy that his cat was not missing in Tampines. I also told him that one of my neighbour's cats went missing for five days before he was found. If you all can recall, milky was missing for 5 days before i spotted him and infomred his owner to get him.

She said that she would call every organization. The couple were also concerned if there was any abuse of cats in our area. I said 'no' but the other side (across the road), there were one case of cat abuse. The cat was poured green paint all over its body.

The wife whom we learnt was called 'C' thanked us repeatedly for us offering to keep a lookout for billie. Actually we did not do much. We parted ways.

Sister contacted Auntie L to inform her of billie. While at B543, i spotted a ginger cat and went to see if it was pi pa. The ginger is actually ring ring that had followed the couple. We spotted the couple again, walking and calling billie. Sister went to find them and told them to keep their phone on in case Auntie L spotted Billie. C asked me how many cats i have, i just said "a lot". C appeared to have a "Wow" expression. I told her that we were forced to feed at later hours because of earlier complaints.

Then we parted ways a second time.
Friday, we spotted C calling for billie.

On sunday, sister received a SMS from C that billie had been found. Billie actually went back to the sister's house to find them itself. I wonder where did Billie go this five days?

Sick BIrd on New Year Day 2007

I was a poor sick bird yesterday. I was sick on Sun night.. i think i had eaten something that made me had a bad Gastric Pain. Mum was also sick on Firday night with a bad stomachache. I was at home sleeping the whole day yesterday... What a bad day to start 2007 but i am still happy to have a whole new year ahead of me....

Manju Ma Lin Shu

Sister insisted on bringing the sick kitten @ ECP despite mum and my protest when we said "Not to bring the cat home" three time over the phone to sister. Since the last bad experience with Lei Lei, mum had repeatedly told sister never to bring the cats @ ECP back but somehow, sister is too stubborn to listen..*sign*

I would said Ma Lin shu is much much tamer (100%) than Lei Lei.At least, he did not meow in the middle of the night like Lei Lei. The noise is one main factor why mum and i did not want any ECP cats to stay in our house. It disturb everyone's sleep and keep everyone in bad mood including myself.

Ma lin shu had allow us to hold him, wash his paws when he pee and hug him like a baby. He smell so i had only touch him and not hold him close to me. He is quite smart for such a tiny and thin cat. Whenever anyone is near him, he will meow. Mum said maybe he missed his mummy and siblings. As sister had mentioned, he had refused to eat inside his carrier. So for mealtime, we need to take him out to eat his meal.

Ma Lin shu should be in our home for two or three more days. Mum had reminded us not to keep Ma lin shu because he is so tiny and cute. but we all know that he will eventually return to the ECP.

As usual, for our cats, they do not like new cats... This time as we did not placed Lin shu in the living room, KK and dudu did not get any chances to hiss at him. DD and sweetie had refused to step into the kitchen. This evening, when i showed sweetie the kitten and told her that this was her 'baby', sweetie scolded ma lin shu. DD hissed and try to show me her cat power( her claws) when i wiped her after her poo this morning.

Yesterday, DD hid herself inside the storeroom since afternoon and only appeared at 11 plus where i grabbed her right into my room before she changed her mind to hide some more. She stepped into my stomach gently when she woke up in the middle of the night. Hmm..i did not know what is she doing. I just felt her stepping me two or three times before running away. 'Hei, i am not the one whom take Ma Lin shu back'. Maybe DD is taking her frustration on me.. ha.....ha...

Super friendly cats at Bendemeer market

Today, dad took mum and me to the Bendemeer market while sister and dad will go to feed dad's workplace cats.

This is my first visit to the market. Normally, i only visited the hawker centre for food. On monday morning, most stalls inside the market were still closed as there was nothing to sell as the wholesale market were not open on sun. Most stalls that were opened were selling vegetables from last Friday.

I am surprised that for such a tiny market, there were so many stalls selling different variety of items. I saw quite a number of cats too. All are sterilized and well-taken care of. Actually i saw something that i think was silly - There is this extremely big banner that said something about getting rid of rats. I am telling mum that if the authority will leave the cats alone, the rats will also be gone too. I patted two DD's clone, one lovely white and brown tabby and one nana clone. I saw a tao-tuo with a bob tailed like sweetie walking, did not get close enough to pat him.


I liked how the upgraded one-room flat in the area are designed. There is a open space outside the kitchen area where the owners can place their plants outside the area. The space is like a mini coridor where all units share the same area. All of the upgraded flats there really looked like very nice.... it looked better than the block where i am living now.

While mum was buying lunch, i went back to find dad whom had come to fetch us. I saw a cat that looked like nana. Sister also came to join me. Sister got a scratch from nana clone when sister touched nana's back. The bad temper seem to be very similar to real nana too where We must sayang her properly, if we anyhow pat her, she will turn around and scream at us... This is how the current nana clone behave... pat wrongly and got a scratch. Sister also carried fake nana like a baby. Then, mum came with our lunch, we patted nana clone again before saying goodbye to her.
