歌仔戲

Taiwanese Opera
Taiwanese opera 歌仔戲 was once performed on nearly every auspicious occasion, including weddings, birthdays, and temple festivals. By tradition, the form is said to have its origin in short songs from Ilan County 宜蘭縣. These songs were purportedly influenced by the narrative music of Taiwan's aboriginal peoples and later evolved into a more powerful musical form. These "Ilan folk songs" are accompanied by an orchestra consisting of the san-hsien 三絃, a three-stringed Chinese banjo; the pipa 琵琶, a four-stringed vertical lute; the tung-hsiao 洞簫, a vertical flute; the sona 哨吶, a trumpet-belled, double-reeded horn; and various percussion instruments, including gongs and drums. Various regional Chinese music theater forms, particularly the pei-kuan and nan-kuan music theater brought to Taiwan by early immigrants from southern China, have clearly influenced Taiwanese opera. This is evident from the colorful makeup and costumes, stage props, and stylized gestures used in Taiwanese opera, which had become a complete musical genre by the 1930s.

The role of Ilan in the development of Taiwanese opera continues to be important today. Several major troupes are based there, including one sponsored by the Ilan County Cultural Center 宜蘭縣立文化中心, which also houses a Taiwanese opera museum. Today, there are nearly 200 troupes performing around the island, but only a few of professional calibre. The best-known is the Ming Hwa Yuan Theater Troupe 明華園歌劇團, established in 1929. Like other Taiwanese opera troupes, it began performing at outdoor stages, often set up in front of temples, but today it also performs at such prestigious venues as the National Theater. The troupe has also toured overseas, performing in Paris and mainland China. Other important compnies include the Ho Lo Taiwanese Opera Troupe 河洛歌仔戲團, the Han Yang Troupe 漢陽歌劇團, and the Lan Yang Troupe 蘭陽戲劇團.

Taiwanese opera's most celebrated actress is Yang Li-hua 楊麗花. With a career spanning over 30 years, she continues to periodically present her own productions. Like many Taiwanese opera actresses, Yang is known for playing only male roles.

Television performances of Taiwanese opera have also been important to its development since the 1960s. Although many TV troupes have a soap opera mentality, with electronic music and pop songs, the Yeh Ching Taiwanese Opera Troupe 葉青歌仔戲團 is one of the few that retained the basic traditional form. Its founder, actress Yeh Ching, has developed an islandwide following through her TV performances and has won numerous awards.

History of Taiwan Geizai

Jennifer say:

taken from:
http://www.gio.gov.tw/taiwan-website/5-gp/culture/tw-opera/

details:
Singing songs (ge zih 歌仔) from songbooks (ge zih ce 歌仔冊) was the most important form of entertainment in Taiwan's early agricultural society. Some were songs sung by busy farmers working in the fields; some were ge zih or Taiwan za nian 雜念 sung by ordinary folk. There were also nian ge 唸歌, sung by the blind and buskers, and begging tunes (ci shih diao 乞食調) sung by beggars. This genre of song was known collectively as jin ge 錦歌, a continuation of a minor form of Ming dynasty music based on the folk songs of southern Fujian province on the Chinese mainland. First sung by amateurs and ordinary folk, jin ge quickly spread in popularity and was soon being performed by travelling entertainers.

Taiwanese opera was a major form of entertainment in early Taiwan society.
The first recorded instance of Chinese opera being performed in Taiwan was in 1624. Introduced into Taiwan from the neighboring provinces of Fujian and Guangdong, Chinese opera is classified into thirteen distinct categories: six traditional operas (li yuan si 梨園戲, gao jia si 高甲戲, luan tan si 亂彈戲, che gu si 車鼓戲, sih gong si 司公戲, and ke jia san jiao cai cha si 客家三腳採茶戲, or Hakka Tea-picking operas); four regional operas (Fuzhou si 福州戲, Putian-Sianyu si 莆仙戲, Siping si 四平戲, and Chaozhou si 潮州戲); and three puppet operas (kuei lei si 傀儡戲, or marionettes; bu dai si 布袋戲, or glove puppets; and pi ying si 皮影戲, or shadow puppets).

The singing of jin ge 錦歌, or ge zih 歌仔 in Taiwanese, was combined with the operatic form of che gu si 車鼓戲 (literally, "cart drum" opera) in Ilan to create what is later known as traditional Taiwanese opera (lao ge zih si 老哥仔戲). The repertoires, music, and body movements from many other styles of theater were absorbed as Taiwanese opera began around 1925. After liberally incorporating props, stage sets, and performance material from the Fuzhou and Shanghai styles of Beijing opera, Taiwanese opera began to grow in popularity.

The incorporation of props, stage sets, and performance material from Beijing opera helped boost the popularity of Taiwanese opera.
In general, Taiwanese opera can be considered a vernacular opera. The style spread not only throughout Taiwan, but also to Fujian province and other Chinese areas in Southeast Asia. At the peak of its popularity, Taiwanese opera was being performed on both indoor and outdoor stages, on the radio, in movies, and on television. It was an important part of temple festivals, special celebrations, and even the daily lives of ordinary people.

However, beginning in the 1970s, rapid development transformed Taiwan from an agricultural society into an industrial and commercialized economy. Consequently, entertainment trends also changed, and Taiwanese opera rapidly declined. However, thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of many scholars, patrons of the arts, and modern drama workshops, Taiwanese opera has once again gained popularity in recent years. Today, it can be seen on both national and international stages. The regeneration of Taiwanese opera is evidence of the genre's ability to adapt and transform, a characteristic that has been demonstrated at every stage of its development.

Infused with new life and energy, modern Taiwanese opera can be seen on international stages. (Courtesy of the Ming Hwa Yuan Theater Troupe)
The foundation of Taiwanese opera music is jin ge 錦歌, which was derived from folk rhymes, folk songs, wailing dirges that express sorrow and dejection, and music incorporated from other types of opera. This repertoire was gradually expanded to include new songs, either created by musicians or adapted from popular tunes of the times.

male lead siao sheng

female lead siao dan

male jester siao chou
Taiwanese opera makes use of a wide range of traditional musical instruments. Stringed instruments include the ye hu 椰胡, a two-stringed Chinese mandolin with a sound box made out of a coconut shell; da guang sian 大廣弦, a large, two-stringed Chinese mandolin; jing hu 京胡, a two-stringed high-register Chinese mandolin; nan hu 南胡, a two-stringed low-register Chinese mandolin; yue cin 月琴, a four-stringed Chinese mandolin with a full-moon-shaped sound box; san sian 三弦, a three-stringed plucked instrument; and gu jheng 古箏, a 25-stringed plucked instrument similar to the zither. Wind instruments include the suo na 嗩吶 horn as well as horizontal and vertical bamboo flutes. In the percussion section one finds the bang zih 梆子, a rectangular, hollow wooden block percussion instrument; shuei yu 水魚, another type of percussion instrument; large and small gongs; opera and northern-style drums; large, regular, and small cymbals; double bells; clapper boards; and hardwood clappers.

Actors and actresses in a Taiwanese opera troupe apply make-up before a performance.
Later, Western musical instruments were also incorporated into Taiwanese opera, including jazz drums, electric pianos, electric guitars, saxophones, and cellos. Taiwanese opera is not restrictive, and any musical instrument capable of producing a lovely, melodious sound is likely to be used.

Originally, Taiwanese opera only had three classifications of characters: namely, the male lead (siao sheng 小生), the male jester (siao chou 小丑), and the female lead (siao dan 小旦). Later, as Taiwanese opera began to incorporate more styles from other major operas, it gradually expanded to include eight major characters. In addition to the siao sheng 小生, there was also the supporting actor (fu sheng 副生), which was further divided into the subcategories of villain (fan sheng 反生) and martial artist (wu sheng 武生); the sorrowful female character (ku dan 苦旦); the primary supporting actress (fu dan 副旦 or hua dan 花旦), which included the subcategory of female villain (yao fu 妖婦); the secondary supporting actress (da hua 大花); the elderly woman (lao po 老婆 or lao dan 老旦); the third-tier supporting actress (san hua 三花); and the female jester (cai dan 彩旦 or san ba 三八). With this variety of characters, Taiwanese opera vividly portrays both comical and special events from everyday life.

Musical instruments of Taiwanese opera include two-stringed low-register Chinese mandolin, a four-stringed Chinese mandolin, northern-style drums, hardwood clappers, and other percussion instruments.
Modern drama has significantly influenced Taiwanese opera. Originally, traditional Taiwanese opera themes involved historical events, tales of gods and spirits, famous legends and myths, auspicious occasions, and stories of swordsmen and heroes. Later, contrived and mystical romance stories, love and hate themes, and farces, were creatively applied to make Taiwanese opera more lively and unrestrained. Even the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex, Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata, Hamlet, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Imperial Watchdog have been performed as Taiwanese opera.

Taiwanese opera is part of daily life in Taiwan, reflecting the thoughts, feelings, and aesthetics of the people. Taiwanese opera expresses incomparable energy, and, as it adapts and introduces new performances, it will continue to be a favorite folk art in Taiwan.

Chinese Astrology :.Horse...eeee

Jennifer say:

Chinese Astrology:
http://chinese.astrology.com/horse.html?arrivalSA=1&cobrandRef=0&arrival_freqCap=2

Thank goodness for open spaces, because the Horse needs plenty of room to roam! Energetic, good with money and very fond of travel, Horses are the nomads of the Chinese Zodiac, roaming from one place or project to the next. All of this Sign's incessant activity and searching may be to satisfy a deep-rooted desire to fit in. Paradoxically, Horses feel a simultaneous yearning for independence and freedom.

Horses crave love and intimacy, which is a double-edged sword since it often leads them to feel trapped. Love connections tend to come easily to Horses, since they exude the kind of raw sex appeal that is a magnet to others. This Sign tends to come on very strong in the beginning of the relationship, having an almost innate sense of romance and seduction. Horses are seducers in general; check out any A-list party and you're bound to find the Horse in attendance. This Sign possesses a sharp wit and a scintillating presence; it really knows how to work a crowd. Surprisingly, Horses tend to feel a bit inferior to their peers, a misconception that causes them to drift from group to group out of an irrational fear of being exposed as a fraud.

An impatient streak can lead Horses to be less than sensitive to others' needs. These colts would rather take a situation firmly in hand as opposed to waiting for others to weigh in or come to terms with it. The lone wolf inside the Horse can at times push others away, but this also makes this Sign stronger and is a key to its success. Horses are self-reliant and, though they might lose interest fast in a tedious, nine-to-five day job, are willing to do the work necessary to get ahead.

Horses tend not to look much at the big picture; instead they just follow their whims, which can result in a trail of prematurely ended relationships, jobs, projects and so on. This Sign really knows how to motivate others, though, and get a lot accomplished. Once they find some peace within themselves, they can curb their wandering tendencies and learn to appreciate what's in their own backyard.

i dun reali like oscar ..i prefer my 'rui' fish...i do not know the chinese name for this fish..but it supposed to be v good for recovery patients...bobtan, mum friend gave mum one but we keep the fish as pet for a long time as it v tame..it never splash water unlike other similar fish even if we do not give it water..sadly, we release it into the wild just like that...i think it too have cross the rainbow bridge now...yeah...dad also released the 3 'eat shit' fishes that stay with oscar into the wild with rui fishes...poor things..that time i am still bit young to feel sori for those fishes...except for those female guppies..hee

our last batch of goldfish is the long body type...not as cute as bubble headed but they are also cute.... they also died of old age..we have them for almost 1 year....fishes are v clever too..they always greet u with their shakin of the boby..shakin a boom boom....shake shake to show they need food

currently, we have havin lohan fishes...last year, there a madness of lohan where every fish shops sell those ugly lookin grey fishes... they can onli stay alone...we need a divider if we wan two inside the same tank..our house have 4...our xiao bai died .... two of the fishes are gift from my uncle and dad colleague...the other 3 is buy one...i like pinky better..she pink unlike her 3 siblings that grey like road... they got names too..xiao hei, vampire , puppy... currently our fish tank has two..and it is called boy home and girls home...as pinky n puppy are male.. vampire and xiao hei that both lie lot of disgusting eggs are females...yah..we just let the egg rot inside the water as they are v protective of their infetile eggs too..

now fish shop are all sellin back goldfishes..

Heroes In the Hard Shell

Jennifer say:

Yes..it Nijia Turtles..i got two nijia turtle...hamie look like their master..hee...used to have 3 terapins but one landed in rainbow bridge... My ah-bob and Lizzie.... the other in rainbow bridge is named feifei..a v good tempered male terrapin..bob and lizzie are both females..when feifei cross the bridge, bob is a widow.... can see tha bob is quiet after feifei leave her...poor bob

i got bob from my uncle..that time bob is alreadi big not like lizzie and feifei that is as small as a 50 cent coin onli...

Bob is now v v big... she stil the same. i have bob for nearly 10 years or more..i cannot recall the years but it definitely more than 6 years..lizzie is younger..i got her before i move in our new flat in SN..so lizzie abt 7 years...

Strangly, though bob is a widow, she do not like lizzie at all..she scared of lizzie in fact...but take note of the fact that both are female..u do not wan lesian effect..HEE... but i though they be good companies for each other...but since both of scared of their own species..they live in their own basin..yeah..those basin u used for bathin babies or wash clothes...

they are definitely easily to take care of than hamsters and cat.. hamsters require constant petting.... and cat..constant attention seeker... but terrapins are v quiet..as long as they got food and fresh water, they look happi... but one bad thin is their shell is v dirty esp lizzie..lizzie dislike any form of scrabbin and so her shell is like dirt pavement but i make it a point to clean her shell with a big brush once a week or twice a week.

bob and Lizzie use to be our sole pets where we took them out for small walk..when they pee , it back home...but since i have hamsters, i seldom took them out... sort of neglected them but i always feed them and clean them, esp changin their water..so i think i doin my part as a RESPONSIBLE pet owner..yeah..dun ever have terrapin as ur pet if u dislikke commitment or u plan to dump them like litter into the wild once they grow as big as bob....

i like bob shell better..very like turtle shaped but lizzie shell look like wrong layering of cerment that out of shape... guess this is our fault as we did not shade her shell when she still a baby...yah..shape like ur plant... petin and holdin it constanlty help to give it a prefect shell...

I love their eyes in the dark..so big and round like sweetie... i guess animals are related in some way...terrapins have cat big eyes, hamsters can use terrapins shell as a horse..(i used to put hamham that more obedient on bob shell for a walk), sweetie love to sit around bob n lizzie area..duno if sweetie lookin at them but as long as she not notty, i will leave her alone)....

Every New year eve, i feed bob n lizzie early dinner and change them fresh water before the big day 1 arrive...yah..i never change this tradition..this year, i feed hamsters their corn sticks on NY eve as a treat..for sweetie, duno..anyway good..Yipee..goin to take sweetie out on NY...duno if she behave herself
